Trey Rakes begins his 2nd season as assistant coach after spending three seasons with the Coastal Carolina basketball program. Rakes previously served as the Video Coordinator at CCU this past season (2021-22) under Hall of Fame Coach Cliff Ellis. He also spent two seasons (2017-19) as a graduate assistant. Rakes rejoined the Chants following two seasons as the associate head coach at Colby Community College where he helped lead the Trojans to the program’s first Jayhawk West regular-season title and finishing the season with a 27-5 record and receiving a bid to the team’s first national tournament in program history. Six players were named all-conference led by conference offensive and defensive player-of-the-year Demarcus Sharp, who was also named a first-team All-American. During his previous time at Coastal, Rakes assisted in the development of All-Sun Belt performer Zac Cuthbertson and the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, DeVante’ Jones.
Rakes played college basketball four years at the University of Pikeville where he was a two-year starter and also served as team captain. During his career the Bears finished with a 112-23 record, making Rakes the all-time winningest player in program history.
He helped lead the Bears to two Mid-South conference titles and the Bears qualified for the NAIA National Tournament all four years, two of which resulted in Elite 8 appearances. Off the court he earned the Mid-South Conference Champion of Character award. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and he went on to earn a master’s degree in sports management from Coastal Carolina. Rakes is a native of Louisville, Ky. His brother Corey played football at the Air Force Academy, and another brother Bailey played basketball at Centre College. His dad JuneBug Rakes was a member of the 1990 Kentucky Wesleyan College basketball team that won the Division II national championship.
