Local church to celebrate Gene Bess

Delayed by COVID-19, former Three Rivers men’s basketball coach Gene Bess is getting a well-earned retirement celebration.

Mt. Calvary Powerhouse Church, where many of Bess’ former players attended services during his 50-year career at Three Rivers, is celebrating Bess at 5 p.m., Sept. 11.

“Every player that he recruited, he would encourage them to go to church somewhere,” Pastor Ron Webb said. “We fed a lot of the players here.”

A ceremony for Bess will start at 5 p.m. with a public dinner to follow. There is no cost to attend. Masks will be required to enter the church, but guests will be allowed to take them off while at their tables.

“I’m looking forward to seeing those guys who played for me for so many years,” Bess said. “I’m hoping they all come back … even if they didn’t stay for more than a month, I’d like for them to come back.”

A former Raider himself, Webb has been in contact with other alumni, and young and old alike will be in attendance.

“I’ve talked to several, and hopefully, most of them will be here,” Webb said. “This man has given his life to this profession, and this is just a small way to say thank you.”

Former players will speak on Bess’ behalf, and while Webb joked the players might roast Bess and share their classic stories of having to run laps at Bacon Park, Bess will get to have the last word.

“There are countless stories that allude to not just coach’s ability to coach, just simple discipline,” Webb said. “I can’t tell you how many have said they are better men now because of Coach Bess’ integrity and discipline … now they are better fathers, coaches, just a better human being as a result of coming through his program.”
