Raiders are lone unbeaten team remaining, will face Western Nebraska next

Three Rivers is the only undefeated team left in the country.

Heading into the postseason, there were three. The Raiders, Jones, and Casper College.

Casper lost its region championship and earned the eighth seed, and Jones was upset in the second-round Tuesday by No. 16 Western Nebraska.

Just in case Casper felt like its region championship loss was a fluke, the Raiders sent them home with a 68-60 win in the second round.

Now, No. 9 Three Rivers (23-0) will face Western Nebraska (17-5) in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Thursday in Lubbock, Texas.

“They’re a good team. We watched them play. We’re just going to stick to what we do. We’re going to come out, play hard and fight until the end,” Three Rivers’ Hya Haywood said.

In its upset, Western Nebraska’s Alejah Douglas scored 27 points on 10 for 20 shooting with 12 rebounds, four assists, and three steals to lead the team. She was 3 for 4 on 3-pointers and 4 for 5 on free throws, as well.

Ky Buell also got 10 points, Shanti Henry had seven, and no other player had more than four.

Douglas leads the team with 18.8 points to go with 4.1 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.7 steals. She’s shooting 47.7% from the field and 86% on free throws.

“Every team here can play. Every team here is here for a reason,” Three Rivers coach Alex Wiggs said. “We have to make sure we are solid, that we don’t have two fouls, that we guard without fouling and just keep them in front of us.”

Lidsey Mahoukou, who had four points against Jones, is second in scoring with 12.8 points and leads the team with 6 rebounds per game, and Buell is averaging 11.1.

“They have really, really good guards. They run the floor well, compete well, and another team that can put the ball in the hole,” Wiggs said. “They’re another team where we need to know personnel, and it all starts on the defensive end.”

Western Nebraska is the top free-throw shooting team in the country (76.4%) and fourth in free throws per game (16.8). It is second in steals (17.7), one spot ahead of the Raiders, and fourth in assists (20).

The quarterfinal projects to be another high-scoring game, with the Raiders averaging 85.0 points and Western Nebraska averaging 82.8.
