Turnovers cost Lady Raiders in closing seconds

ST. LOUIS -- The Lady Raiders didn't commit a lot of turnovers, but they committed two at an inopportune time.

Three Rivers College committed two turnovers in the final 15 seconds of play and lost to St. Louis Community College 63-62 on Wednesday.

The Lady Raiders had 13 total turnovers, five fewer than the Lady Archers, and were even with St. Louis with 16 points off turnovers.

In a game with six ties and 13 lead changes, it was tied with 4 minutes remaining.

Ge'Naisha Robinson, who led the Lady Raiders with 14 points and seven rebounds, hit a layup and St. Louis countered with back-to-back 3-pointers.

With a minute to play, Robinson grabbed an offensive rebound and found Camdyn McDaniel for a 3 that put Three Rivers (20-5) ahead by a point.

After a timeout by St. Louis (14-8), Crishana Wilson sank a jumper for another lead change with 38 seconds to go.

The Lady Raiders called their own timeout, but turned it over out of the break.

Three Rivers got the ball back one more time with 5 seconds to go, but turned it over again.

While Three Rivers was plus-2 on second-chance points, the Lady Raiders grabbed 15 fewer rebounds.

Wilson dominated the boards with 20 rebounds, including eight offensive rebounds, and had 13 points. For the season, she is averaging 15 rebounds and 17.5 points.

Shamara Glover came off the bench to lead St. Louis in scoring with 19 points.

In a game with 24 total fouls, the Lady Raiders were 5 for 13 at the free-throw line. DeNayia Holmes went 4 for 6 at the foul line for Three Rivers. It was the third time that Three Rivers has shot under 40 percent from the charity stripe this season. As a team, the Lady Raiders are shooting 58 percent on free throws.

St. Louis was 7 for 8 on free throws.

Michael Everhart was also in double figures for the Lady Raiders with 11 points after she made three of the team's seven 3-pointers.

Both teams made 25 field goals, and St. Louis took 10 more shots.

The Lady Raiders closed the final 3 minutes of the first quarter on a 10-point run.

Down by four, Robinson kick-started it with a jumper.

Joya Smith scored a minute later and Everhart sank a pair of 3s to put the Lady Raiders ahead by six at the buzzer.

Holmes opened the second quarter with a jumper for some second-chance points.

The Lady Raiders stayed in front until the third quarter, when Wilson got a layup midway through for one of 13 lead changes.

Three Rivers has now had 11 of its 25 games be decided by five of fewer points. It is 8-3 in those contests. The other two losses were against Wabash Valley.

The Lady Raiders, briefly ranked 25th in the nation in the Jan. 24 poll, are 2-3 since having their 16-game winning streak snapped.

They are, however, 6-1 in Region XVI play and 1 1/2 games ahead of State Fair.

If Three Rivers defeats Jefferson at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bess Activity Center, it would secure the top seed in the Region XVI tournament.

Three Rivers has already secured at least the No. 3 seed, giving the Lady Raiders a first round bye for the first time in nine seasons under coach Jeff Walk.
